Synopsis

"Het Leven Lacht Me Toe (Life Smiles At Me)" follows the special friendship between Fleur and Alysha. Both reside in a youth care institution in Tilburg. In a world where they experience little certainty, they find stability in each other's company. Their friendship is so close that they find it difficult to envision themselves apart from each other.

As Alysha's relationship with her boyfriend deepens, Fleur feels excluded. An attempt to make Alysha jealous escalates into an argument between them. Forced to see themselves apart, Fleur and Alysha find themselves in an unfamiliar situation.

A work vacation is organized from the care institution, and Fleur and Alysha participate to break away from their daily routine. However, a few weeks before their departure, the situation in the Netherlands escalates. They are arrested and temporarily detained. When Fleur and Alysha are in Bosnia, they experience a sense of liberation. Their friendship seems to be restoring. Although the fear of returning to the Netherlands is present, and they worry that everything will start all over again, they find solace in the fact that they have each other.

"Het Leven Lacht Me Toe (Life Smiles At Me)" takes the viewer on an emotional journey and provides insight into the value of friendship and the resilience of young individuals trying to stand their ground in a challenging environment. The film invites the viewer to reflect on the meaning of connection and hope, even in the most difficult circumstances.
